FALL 2010 SEASON REPERTOIRE

Heart and Music (from “A New Brain”), words and music by William Finn, additional lyrics and arranged by William F. Edwards. During its brief two-month run at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, “A New Brain,” starring Oklahoma’s own Kristin Chenoweth, earned the 1999 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off Broadway Musical. William Finn’s autobiographical story reaches into the depths of despair, but overcomes with this number, which includes the optimistic lyrics: “You gotta have heart and music; Heart and music make a song!”

Hallelujah (from “Hit the Deck”), words Cliff Grey and Leo Robin, music by Vincent Youmans, arranged by Mark Hayes. This great Vincent Youmans show tune from his 1927 Broadway smash is given a refreshing makeover by Mark Hayes, with a jazzy style and an upbeat message that's particularly relevant in today’s uncertain economic climate.

Misty, words by Johnny Burke, music by Erroll Garner, arranged by Russ Robinson. It is said that Errol Garner composed this great melody while traveling across the country on an airplane. Time has turned it into a classic and this dreamy a cappella choral setting embraces all the beauty and sensitivity of the original pop standard.

For Good (from “Wicked”), words and music by Stephen Schwartz, arranged by Mac Huff. From the hit Broadway musical “"Wicked,” this is a tender, expressive ballad with a touching lyric: “Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes a sun. Like a stream that meets a boulder halfway through the wood. Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But, because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” Its message about how we can affect each other's lives is one everyone in the audience can easily relate to.

And So Did I, words by Isaac Joslyn Cox, music by Richard A. Williamson. Inspired by a charming 19th Century poem by Isaac Joslyn Cox, this light, airy original madrigal uses simple counterpoint in the voice parts and a humorous text to tell its story of young love.

Winterlight, words and music by Amy F. Bernon. This is a delightful, lilting original choral song that explores the wonders and distinctive images of winter as seen through the eyes of children. "Winterlight...it's a glittering winter's night...it's a shivering, silver, shining silent night...".

Ose Shalom (The One Who Makes Peace), traditional Hebrew text with music by John Leavitt. This timely text from the Jewish liturgy is brilliantly set in a lovely original work by Wichita composer John Leavitt. Its simple message of peace is enhanced with soaring melodies, lyrical instrumental lines, and an underlying emotion that makes this work so passionate and effective.

Everywhere Christmas Tonight, words by Phillips Brooks and J. Paul Williams, music by Joseph M. Martin. Based on a nineteenth-century lyric by Phillips Brooks, the music has a fresh, uplifting feeling, with great momentum all the way. “Christmas in lands of the fir tree and pine. Christmas in lands of the palm tree and vine. Christmas where snow peaks stand solemn and white...everywhere, everywhere, everywhere Christmas tonight...” A new festive piece for the holidays!

Silent Night, Silent World, words and music by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse. This joyful anthem is based on Dvorak's Largo from his New World Symphony. The opening measures feature the Christmas narrative: “For unto us a Child is born,” and the choral response: “Silent night, holy night,” is sung to Dvorak's melody in a brilliant pairing of text and melody. Absolutely gorgeous!

Christmas Time Is Here, words by Lee Mendelson, music by Vince Guaraldi, arranged by Audrey Snyder. Vince Guaraldi's theme song from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is brought to life in this a cappella arrangement.

Women's Ensemble Selection: Santa Baby (as recorded by Eartha Kitt), words and music by Joan Javits, Philip Springer and Fred Ebb; arranged by Mac Huff. Here's a musical Christmas list for all of the extravagant gals who've been especially good all year! This tongue in cheek 1953 holiday classic is a sweet (and saucy) change of pace for the season and may even bring a surprise visitor to stage!

Men's Ensemble Selection: Feliz Navidad, words and music by Jose Feliciano, arranged by John Leavitt. Puerto Rican singer, virtuoso guitarist and composer Jose Feliciano is known for many international hits, but especially for this 1970 holiday song, now brought to stage by our men's ensemble.

Et In Terra Pax, music by Greg Gilpin. A unique choral work that features a Latin phrase that’s so fitting for the holidays: “And on earth, peace to men of good will.” It has a slow, dreamy feel that really conveys the message of peace through the music.

Personent Hodie, words from “Piae Cantiones” (1582), based on a German tune (1360), arranged by Andy Beck. Finger cymbals and hand drum begin, then the a cappella voices enter quietly and gradually build all the way to the final fortissimo "in excelsis Deo!" In Latin throughout, with some divisi, this marvelous arrangement is an impressive Christmas staple, featuring the authentic flavor of the sixteenth-century chant.

Christmas Kum Ba Ya, words and music by Jay Althouse. This refreshing cultural-musical experience for the holidays combines English text with chant-like Swahili motives. When the accompaniment drops out from under the voices on the Swahili phrases, the effect is stunning!

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, words and music by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin, arranged by Mark Hayes. Born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, on July 26, 1914, Ralph Blane (Ralph Uriah Hunsecker) was an American composer, lyricist and performer. Blane wrote this classic holiday song with his partner, Hugh Martin, for the 1944 movie musical, Meet Me in St. Louis. Blane died in 1995 at the age of 81, and is buried in his hometown.

A Holiday Sing-Along, arranged by Audrey Snyder. Our whole audience will sing along with our season’s concert closer during this spectacular holiday medley. This joyful tapestry of secular holiday favorites is guaranteed to bring merriment and festive cheer to one and all! The 4-minute choral medley includes “Deck the Hall,” “Jingle Bells,” “O Christmas Tree,” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”.
